Kehena Beach

(12 Ratings)
Black sand beach!
Due to its secluded nature this beach is often nude. Monday has been nicknamed "Gay Day." WARNING: While sunbathing here is great, this is an often challenging place to swim - use utmost caution! Also, black sand is much hotter than white sand, so don't plan on going barefoot. Don't leave valuables in car. DIRECTIONS: About 30 minutes south of Hilo. Find it at Highway 137 near mile marker 19 (near the phone booth). It's one mile from Kalani Eco-Resort. Then climb down the lava rock trail to the beach.

Monday is ''Gay Day" at Kehena Beach

A long time tradition at Kehena Beach is for the gay community to show up at the beach on Mondays. You'll meet gay people there everyday... there's a large gay community in the neighborhood. Many subdivisions in the area are over 60% gay (including Kalapana and Puna Beach Palisades). Awesome body surfing in big waves. A resident pod of spinner dolphins show up often and you could get to swim with them! Moderately steep trail down to the beach..... well worth it! Skinnydipping with dolphins! What could be more fun???

The Best Part of a Boring Island

As boring as Hilo (and the Big Island in general) is, this black sand beach is phenomenal. What a pleasant surprise. The directions to get to the beach, as described above, are correct and accurate. I used them to get there. There is, however, a steep climb down to the beach. Once you there, though.... truly amazing. Clean, black sand, ruff surf and peaceful. Yes, there is nudity and I guess you can do naught things there, but enjoy the black sand and the view. Most people don't get a chance to experience a place like Kahena Beach. Enjoy it!
