What we say

Black sand beach on the Hilo side
Kahena is a small secluded black sand beach on the Puna coast south of Pahoa (about 30 minutes south of Hilo). Find it at Highway 137 near mile marker 19 (near the phone booth). It's one mile from Kalani Eco-Resort. Then climb down the lava rock trail to the beach. Due to its secluded nature this beach is a popular nude beach. Be careful of the strong waves at this beach and be sure to bring along sandals since black sand gets very hot.
